AMERICORPS PLEDGE
I will get things done for Amercia-to make our people safer, smarter, and healthier.
I will bring America together to strengthen our communities.
Faced with apathy, I will take action. Faced with conflict, I will seek common ground. Faced with diversity, I will preserve.
I will carry this commitment with me this year and beyond.
I am an AMERICORPS Member. And I'm going to get things done.
In 1933, the Civilian Conservation Corps was created to help Americans deal with
hardships the Great Depression brought. Later on in 1961, the Peace Corps was created
in the pre-Vietnam years in order to help people both domestic and foriegn. AMERICORPS
was created in 1993 by President Clinton in order to have young people do their part to
help our country. AMERICORPS offers young people who want to further the education, the
opportunity to do so by doing service to their communities and obtaining finacial help
for college if they complete their service. JIM WELLS COUNTY became part of the AMERICORPS
program in 1997 and there is now a fully functional AMERICORPS unit which operates from Alice,
TX, the county seat of JIM WELLS. Different AMERICORPS projects occur monthly within JIM
WELLS. See the PROJECTS SECTION to learn more about what AMERICORPS members are doing to
strengthen our community, encourage responsibilty, and expand opportunities.
Jim Wells is part of S.T.A.C.I., the South Texas AmerCorps Initiative. Our current Project Director is Bonnie McGee.

The AMERICORPS members in Alice have established themselves with the Alice
Recyclery. They have volunteered many hours helping the recyclery improve
it's efficiency.
SCHOOLS:
In 1999, the Jim Wells County Americorps conducted a Recycling Project with the Premont Elementary.
The students brought in their cans and recieved funds which went toward a school
trip at the end of the year.
